About this course

The how to operate a gantry crane or overhead crane course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to safely operate a gantry crane or overhead crane within the coal mining and metalliferous mining sectors.

The following topics are covered within the how to operate an overhead gantry course:

  • Plan and prepare for gantry/overhead crane operations
  • How to operate a gantry crane/overhead crane and work procedures you need to observe
  • Perform gantry/overhead crane operator maintenance in order to maintain the equipment plus you’ll know what records you must keep

None Note - Some mine sites will have pre-requisites to operate a gantry crane (normally RIIHAN203E Conduct lifting operations or RIIHAN208E Dogging)

Training requirements

The following is required to commence enrolment in the Gantry crane course:

The following is required on the day of training and assessment:

  • Steel capped/composite boots
  • Long-sleeved, high visibility shirt (high visibility vests available for loan)
  • Long pants
  • Hard hat (some are available for loan on the day)

Momentum High Risk Training will provide all training materials and stationery.

  • You’re welcome to bring your own lunch as fridges and crib rooms are available for use; or
  • Various lunch options are available close by at the Mackay Harbour

Course outcomes

You will receive a Statement of Attainment in RIIHAN305D Operate a gantry or overhead crane issued by Halo Nation Training (RTO No. 32485) once you have been deemed competent.

The gantry crane qualification will give you the skills to apply for jobs across all major cities in Australia including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Mackay, Perth and any city where gantry cranes are in operation.

Gantry cranes are used in a wide range of workplaces, from major construction sites lifting some of the heaviest loads you can imagine, all the way down to small gantry cranes, such as those that lift engines out of cars.
